when the train passes Sing-Sing
Samantha Jade Remigio
sitting on the left side of the cart,
depending on which way you are facing,
I pass the fence,
a tower with a guard,
the circular barbed wire,
the countless faces that must be inside
I pass the infinite amount of felony charges,
and plea deals,
and guilty until proven guiltiest,
the unimaginable number of innocent men
I pass the house of regret,
the house of real blues,
or perhaps-
the home of real prayers
today is not a day
today is not a day for self-improvement
no self-reflections
say no to critical thinking questions
no thank you to personal surveys
and self-actualization
come back tomorrow motivation
instead we need a good wallow
self-pity with a side of blah
I am down for a silent cry
burying deep in blankets of sorrow
maybe some ice cream and shame on the menu
today is not a day to remember
